  11.     Decompressing and Enjoying Your Archived Shareware Package
  12.             (For IBM PC's and clones with hard drives)

  15. 1. These instructions assume a familiarity with basic DOS
  16. commands and procedures. If you do not have that knowledge, open
  17. a good DOS book and practice the tutorial or find a friend who
  18. can help.
  19.  
  20. 2. Create a new directory on your hard drive (drive C) with an
  21. appropriate title that is easy to remember.
  22.  
  23. 3. Copy your shareware package, .zip or .arc file etc., to the
  24. new directory. Don't delete the original compressed file in case
  25. something should adversely effect the copy. Check to make certain
  26. the copy process went OK.

  28. 4. Put a copy of the decompressing tool in the new directory. In
  29. the case of zipped files, this would be PKUNZIP.EXE.

  31. 5. At the DOS prompt of the new directory, or from within an
  32. archiving shell, use the appropriate commands and decompress the
  33. archived file. At the DOS prompt, enter PKUNZIP filename.zip.
  34. The archived file will then decompress ('explode', 'uncrunch',
  35. etc.), i.e. separate into its separate components - the
  36. individual files that were compressed together. These files will
  37. remain in the new directory. If you have acquired shareware that
  38. was compressed by the arc process, your decompressing tool is
  39. ARCE.COM not pkunzip.exe, and the command at the dos prompt has a
  40. similiar syntax: arc filename.arc. An archiving utility, such
  41. as Archiver or Shez, will not require you to be at the DOS prompt
  42. of the new directory in order to decompress your shareware.

  44. 6. Some shareware comes in the form of self extracting files
  45. which do not need a decompressing tool to separate. Their
  46. filenames are usually flagged by an underline slash before the
  47. extension which is often .exe or .com. In any case, the
  48. information from the BBS or shareware company will identify such
  49. files. Merely run them as you would any executive file and they
  50. will decompress.

  52. 7. Keep a backup copy of your original shareware file on a
  53. floppy. Print out a copy of the file list that emerged from
  54. decompressing and note files such as readme. and those with
  55. extensions such as .txt or .doc. These are text files which are
  56. meant to be read before you begin to do anything. They will be
  57. introductory documents, manuals and intstructions, etc. that are
  58. essential to getting started. A file such as doc.bat is a batch
  59. file that will allow you to view and often printout documents,
  60. either to the screen or printer or both.
